Climate
Cool and humid due to proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. Frequent rainfall requires careful attention, especially in viticulture. Longer ripening period gives grapes high acidity.
Soil Structure
Mostly clay and limestone. Some areas have sandy soil. This diversity allows production of different wine styles.
Local Grapes
Red grape varieties: Baga (the region's icon, late ripening, high tannin).
White grape varieties: Bical, Maria Gomes (Fernão Pires).
Wines Produced
High-acid red wines with aging potential. Lively, aromatic white wines. Espumante (sparkling wines) – Bairrada is one of Portugal's most important sparkling wine production centers.
Taste & Aroma Profile
Red: Sour cherry, red plum, tobacco, leather; pronounced tannin structure.
White: Citrus, floral aromas, minerality.
Acidity: High. Body: Medium–full. Profile: Lively, strong acidity, ageable structure.
