Vinho Verde DOC
Climate
Located in northwestern Portugal, in the Minho region. Under strong Atlantic influence: cool, rainy and humid climate. High rainfall and mild temperatures preserve grape acidity.
Soil Structure
Mostly granite-based soils. Well-drained, mineral-rich. Traditionally, vines are trained high (pergola system) to protect from humidity.
Local Grapes
White grape varieties: Alvarinho – Intensely aromatic, tropical and citrus character. Loureiro – Floral and citrus aromas. Arinto (Pedernã) – High acidity, minerality. Trajadura, Avesso, Azal – Often used in blends.
Red grape varieties: Vinhão – High-acid, deeply colored and rustic red wines.
Wines Produced
Generally famous for white wines. Low alcohol (9–11%), refreshing, sometimes with a light spritz (frizzante feel). Small quantities of red and rosé are also produced.
Taste & Aroma Profile
White Vinho Verde: Green apple, lemon, tropical fruits. Lively, fresh, lightly spritzy feel. Acidity: High. Body: Light – medium.
Alvarinho-based Vinho Verde: More intense, complex, age-worthy whites. Peach, mango, floral notes.
